Step 4. Download ODIN, unzip(Don’t have unzipping program? Download and install 7Zip.), and run the program.

Download ODIN

Step 5. When ODIN runs, you should see a yellow highlight with a COM appearing.  If you don’t see it, download Samsung Kies and install.  Then plug-out and plug in your micro-USB cable to your phone, you should see it now.

Step 6. Choose “PDA” in ODIN and choose the stock ROM file you downloaded/unzipped earlier.

Step 7. Hit “Start” and your phone should start unrooting/unbricking back to ICS official stock ROM.

Step 8. Your Galaxy S2 i9100 will reboot after 5-10 minutes.

Step 9. Your phone should now be on stock ICS.

I just made the steps but when I pushed START it said nothing, and after I restarted the phone it doesn’t show the logo of the phone, but it shows a picture of PC and Phone with Triangle in the middle between them, it doesn’t go even to the downloading mode now.

Max, I have the same problem on my phone. I did try to run ODIN on the mode mentioned by Najwan. But the issue I now have is that whenever I connect the phone to my pc the pic of phone and pc with triangle in between comes on and goes off continuously. While the pic stays there when it’s connected to an ac charger.
              What can I do here?

hi, i just did all the steps an got to were the phone re-starts but now it wont go past the the S symbol …. did i do something wrong ??
    HELP !!!

    • Simon says:

11.After you’ve got the PASS message, the phone will probably get stuckat S logo. If it reboots fine without getting stuck at the S logo, then okay, you’re done, skip to next step. Otherwise, worry not and do this:
1.Boot to recovery mode — for which, first power off phone and after screen goes off, wait for 5-6 seconds, and then press and hold Home + Volume Up + Power keys together. Once you are in recovery mode, use volume keys to move the selection up and down and power or home key to select the option.
2.Go to Factory Reset and select it. Select Yes on next screen.
3.Now, go to Wipe Cache and select it. Confirm Yes on next screen.
4.Now, select reboot system now to boot your Galaxy S2. It will boot up fine. And you’ll have official Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, firmware on your Galaxy S2 i9100. Go to Settings and scroll down and select About Phone and check the info there.

  17. bob says:

guys, where you are going wrong is when you download your stock rom you also need to download the matching stock kernal. this is important thats why you see only the samsung logo.
    hope this helps

  18. Road Runner says:

Dont need to download anything else.

You just have to find the stock/official rom and have it unzipped and ready.

I made a mistake where the stock rom i downloaded was zipped and password protected. when i tired to unzip i entered a wrong password and my unzip program created some wrong files.
Without realising this I ran odin and pointed to the wrong firmware file… Odin ran upto :

    Enter CS for MD5..
Check MD5.. Do not unplug the cable..
    Please wait..

this is the 1st time im using ODIN so i wasnt sure whether it was progressing or not. After about 30 minutes i saw it hadnt done anything and went to check what had happened and realised that i had made an error.

I tired pressing the reset button on ODIN and ODIN got stuck. I killed it using task manager and ran it again.
This time I unzipped the rom file properly and in 5 minutes i had the phone back unrooted.

  19. Daniel says:

  29. Krum says:

    Hey guys,
i followed the steps and everything worked, except that my screen froze as well, but i followed the steps given by Simon. I have another question thou. When i start kies it says that it does not support my firmware. I read about it and i found that i have to change my kernal to original one. I did it but my phone simply froze… I did the same thing as given here as instructions just in the pda i attached the kernel. Nothing happen thou. I tried making factory restore and deleting the cache but it didn’t help this time. So can someone help?

    • Krum says:

Once i failed to install the kernal i followed this procedure again, and this time i did not have to do what Simon said… strange anyway at least my phone is func. now. :)

      • ryzyryry says:

  30. Diwakar says:

I am india, and today I updated my phone to ICS 4.0.3 xxpl7 by first changing the CSC code form INU to NPL, and then updated it through kies. I then rooted my phone using Odin, and now when i connect my gt i9100 to kies to restore from backup, it doesnt show up! please help guys!

    • Gladi8or says:

Diwakar, once you’ve rooted your phone, KIES does not recognize your phone. If u want the data back, unroot your phone, and kies should recognize your phone just fine. Restore your data, make sure everything is in it, and THEN you root it. Rooting does not make you lose any data, so there. HOPE IT HELPED.

  31. jeff says:

Yeah I have the same issue … to elaborate my issue, I was running on Gingerbread 2.3.6 (don’t remember the kernel version). Then I rooted the phone and was using ICS. I initially was using the Resurrection remix ICS ROM. After having a few issues with that, I installed the Foxhound ROM.
Now when I tried to unroot my phone using this method, I am too stuck at the ‘S’ logo and the name.

    Hey Max,

Just wondering if you ahve any ideas on how to help me with my situation.
For some reason RR 2.6.1 messed up my phone (maybe it didnt download correctly and was corrupted).
In any case I tried to unroot/unrick the phone but after passing through ODIN it reboots and sits on the Samsung reboot screen. I’ve tried repeating the unbricking but it still behaves the same.

    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thanks Max!

  71. Ian McCluskey says:

WOW! This is the only thing that worked for me after it ‘bricked’ itself. I clicked on CWM to reboot into download mode and it just got stuck in a boot loop on the Samsung Galaxy S2 logo. I tried many different things advised all over the web – all without any success at all – I wasn’t even able to recognise the phone in the end! Changed the USB port, started from the beginning of this page and it flashed the suggested ROM first time. Took a couple of attempts to boot up and I did a factory reset (couldn’t do this until now) and wiped the cache and then TA-DA!!!My phone worked again.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! xxx

I have ran ODIN twice in attempts to reinstall the Stock ICS rom but after i do it the battery empy/charging screen just flashes and thats it.
Holding VolUp, Home n Power does nothing only VolDown, Home n Power to go back to the download mode.
I really need my phone. How do i get the thing working again. The reason i am going back to Stock is RR rom would not load, kept stopping on RR bootup screen.

Try to wipe cache and do a factory reset by going to recovery mode. (Volume up+ home button + power) and then try to reboot your phone. It should work. Try to run odin once again. Make sure all boxes are unchecked except auto reboot.

  78. Ken says:

Hi, I just rooted with the 5.3 kernel you provided. All seems to be normal except for one thing: I cannot install apps on my SD card anymore. Any solutions to this problem? Thanks and hope to hear a reply soon

  79. shah says:

    Hi All,

Appreciate any gurus here can help me to solve the issue.

My S2 was running ICS 4.0.4 custom ROM for like 4 months ago and it ran flawlessly until yesterday I’ve tried to perform backup using CWM. I forgot what version of CWM and whay Kernel that I’m using. SO I just simply did the normal Vol Up+ Home + Power press and hoping the CWM interface would appear. The thing is the expected interface was not appear and it just restart the phone. I tried once again as I thought the method I used was wrong so I press again but this time I used Vol Down + Home + Power. What appeared was the download mode and I know that is not what i want so i press Vol Down to cancel and expecting the phone to get restarted.
Scary thing happened as my phone only display the “Samsung Galaxy S2 1900i” for a few second and went black again. I’ve tried couple times but same thing happen over and over again.

    Question:
    1. Is this behaviour called “Brick Phone” ?
    2. If yes, how to solve it without harming all my personal data in the phone memory as wel as external sdcard?
    3. Please ..oh pleaseeee help me as I need my phone back alive!

    Thank you

  92. Aaquib Badi says:

After you’ve got the PASS message, the phone will probably get stuckat S logo.

NOTE: IT MAY DELETE ALL THE PICS, APPS, VIDEOS ETC…

Hi Max! I think I’ve made a bis mistake. Then I’ve tried to root it back with cf-kernel like in your other post but same thing.. so i’m stock on boot logo. Could you help me ? And remember I can only go to downlaod mode with my usb jig. I can’t go to recovery mode because my volume buttons doesn’t work. Your help would be very appreciated. And sorry for the english language.. not too good. Thxs !

      Heey Khem,

      You sould try this..
      1) Startup your pc
      2) Startup Odin
2a) When the yellow highlicht doesn’t appear you sould install Samsung Kies.
2b) When this isnt enough u sould try troubleshoot in Samsung Kies so it will reinstall the USB drivers for the Galaxy s 2 (i9100)
2c) Reconnect your phone with Odin
      3) Press PDA
      4) Search your ROM
      5) Hit start, and wait untill it pass

You also can give it a try by using an other USB port.
I hope this will help you out.

Been repeatedly getting issues when trying to flash back to a stock ROM. I had followed the rooting guide here for my i9100. It was on ICS stock rom before rooting. Rooting was successful, using

    Kernel_I9100XXLQ7_INSECURE

Then tried installing CM10 nightly onto my Galaxy S2.

    cm-10.1-20130318-NIGHTLY-i9100

After that phone hung with black screen after the Samsung boot screen. Followed this guide to try to restore back to stock firmware but have repeatedly got issue where odin hangs at factoryfs.img. Have tried multiple different roms so far all hanging at this step but tantalisingly some seem to progress more than others – so far have tried:

    I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ
    GT-I9100_CPW_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100CPWLP5
    GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XEULP5

the CPWLP5 ROM above progressed furthest in the factoryfs.img download but still didn’t complete. However, now as i’ve been attempting this for so long i’ve now got the red ‘Low Battery Can’t Download’ message (battery was full when i started)

Any ideas on how to recover?

I just tried to install ICS through Kies and got this error message on the desktop. It was during the install process. My phone had the android robot (but not the picture of his back open and gears running). The phone said something to the effect of downloading and not to unplug the target.

    Kies told me to…

    1. Disconnect the mobile phone from the cable, remove the battery, and reattach the battery.
    2. Press the Power button
    3. Make sure that the mobile phone has been turned on completely.
    4. Reconnect the mobile phone to the cable and start the upgrade.

I did all this, but when the phone rebooted it has a yellow triangle with ” ! ” on it saying “Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again”.

Kies doesn’t see that a device is installed. It just keeps saying “connecting”. I hit “tools”, “Emergency Firmware Recovery” but it still does nothing. It doesn’t recognize the device.

    Help?

hi Max I may be late to this forum…but im having a problem with my s2 and after going through the web searching for soultions but not finding anything tangible I remembered this forum…because it was over here I learnt basically everything about rooting and android…I started with an s2 gt i9100 but im now using the s3….

well my problem is I wanted to update my sisters phone s2 i9100 to the official jelly bean using odin. it was previously on android 2.3.5 ….but im now stuck in a boot loop I tried factory reset and clearing the cache according to the guide I was following but couldn’t resolve the problem…I even flashed multiple times through odin again but still in the boot loop…

so my question is can I flash this firmware using odin or if you have a better solution please help me…

  156. Loren Bagby says:

So this is not really unrooting, it is wiping the phone and re-installing the OS so that you you lose everything. Unrooting would just be removing the root modification.

  157. Gemma says:

Hi there I tried to root my phone, as I wanted to unlock it using a chainfire program, I wasn’t sure which unsecure kernal to use, but i was told it didn’t matter if I was going to put a secure kernal back in once rooted, problem is the root never properly worked, and when it would reboot I would get the samsung screen with yellow triangle and then it went black, so I tried your method but got tuck in a boot loop, so I then had to do a factory reset through the recovery boot mode, which was fine and my phone is on, obviously all my data (apps and progress is gone) not a lot to be done there, but my OS is different, I had recently (about 2weeks ago) had an update, so when I pulled the task manager bar down, it would scroll as there were more than just 5 options to be quick clicked. also I was able to put my app menu in alphabetical order, so basically I appear to be on an older OS but I am unable to update through my phone and kies as well, as it tells me my firmware is not supported for upgrade through kies.

I believed I was on a ICS version, though reading up about latest firmware there seems to be a later version but jelly bean? I had reason to believe JB was earlier than ICS, but maybe not? I am currently 4.0.3. If I recall I was 4.1 something though I am not 100%, but I know this OS is earlier.

Basically I miss my previous OS and dunno what more to do, etensive search is driving me brain dead, any help possible?

Posted from Simon earlier———- Read through the posts!!

After you’ve got the PASS message, the phone will probably get stuckat S logo.
