Carbon ROM for T-Mobile Galaxy S2! [Android 4.4.4]

carbon-rom-tmobilegalaxys2-sgh-t989

For this week’s T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989 ROM of the Week, check out the latest version of Carbon ROM.

Based on Android 4.4.4, Carbon ROM gives you the best of Android OS along with numerous number of customization features that will allow you to fully utilize the latest Android features to the fullest.

First off, the latest Carbon ROM has two cameras working flawless out of the box, and no dithering like some of the older Android 4.4.2 custom ROMs.  That bug has finally been squashed and you no longer have to reply on your sixth sense to take great videos.  You will also enjoy PhotoSphere, Panorama, and Lens Blur on Google Camera (download on Play Store).

Latest Carbon ROM features many of the customization you have probably seen before plus some more including Battery Saver Mode, custom system animations (check Toast animation in settings), Active Display, 8 Slider Lockscreen targets, Lockscreen notifications (my favorite, now actually used on the beta Android L Preview), Pocket Mode, PIE Controls, OmniSwitch, HOVER notifications, and some more.

Also, I have tried the Wild Kernel, which works fine and gives you overclocking but it breaks your vibration on version 005.  (Future versions may fix this but for now, I would wait a week more for more stable version.)

Overall, Carbon ROM is certainly the best Android 4.4.4 custom ROM out “right now” so definitely give this bad boy a go this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

  • Roman

Hey all, got this installed today. Coming from the latest Paranoid ROM which can also be found on this website. So far so good, everything seems to be working (keep you posted if anything comes up). It is slower than Paranoid ROM, Antutu bench marks Carbon at 8558 where I was getting 12747 with Paranoid. I had no issues with paranoid except that it lacked customizations. So even though the bench mark is slower, it still runs relatively smooth, that with the added customizations will have me running this for a bit. Also I have done away with CWM and am now using TWRP. So far so good peeps. I keep you posted.

    • Roman

Well I killed all apps and data and WiFi and I got 10181 from antutu. Much better!

  • davkrav

On titanium backup it tells be to check off USB Debugging, i canot find this anywhere in the settings please help! Thanks.

    • roman

go to Settings>About phone then tap repeatedly “Build number” about 7 times. Then the hidden developer options will be enabled. Then go Settings>Developer options. Scroll down to “Android debugging” and check the box and that should do it.

      • davkrav

Thank you so much! It worked let’s hope this fixes other problems too.

  • Bill

Anyone else having trouble with WiFi on this one ? I keep getting failed to connect msg.

    • Treyton

Don’t worry, that is a minor bug. Mine won’t change from orange to white like it is supposed to.

  • davkrav

Does anyone know how to create folders in the application menufor organization?

  • vinicius

  • gregg

Installed carbon rom 4.4 and first time unrooted my phone even following the instruactions to the T. Previously had rooted stock samsung galaxy s2 hercules jelly bean and worked great no problems. The second installation the root was not affected. I now want to backup with titanium and cant find developers options to check usb debugging. Is it hidden in another place?

  • orit

hi. i installed it yesterday and besides the fact that it takes the phone a bit longer to wake up and unlock everything works fine. my an tutu with the original 4.1.2 rom was 12000 and now on a good moment its 10000. i couldn’t load my samsung memo back from the titanium backup and the samsung calander which i liked better than the google one.
i like many of the features but i don’t feel like “i have a new phone”… it’s nice but i’m not sure it was worth the trouble of all the hours it took me to do it and customize it…(it was my first time ☺)
thanks for all the step by step tutorial!!!! it was very helpful!!!

    • orit

Update, when I try to wake it up 50% of the times the screen stays black and does not wake up. Many times it is turned off. No idea why

      • wvuravensfan

you need to change your gov. try the Samsung setting. As default it will be set to interactive and it is a little laggy.

        • orit

what is gov and how do i change it? i flashed the dirty unicorn rom 4.4.2 and 50% of the time i am not able to answer calls, i see them on the screen but it freezes.
i am one step away from going back to stock rom so if you can help me i will appreciate it

        • Kamil

I ‘ve overclocked min just like Max did and it still freezes and does not wake up like oritt says.

        • Robert

I flashed 2 GS2 with the Carbon ROM and they both have this issues where the phone have trouble turning it half the time. Has anyone found a fix? What is ‘gov’ and Samsung settings which you speak of? Thanks.

  • Mark

I like this rom, but I really like CM 11 Nightly. I love the customization on Carbon but I had some of the issue’s stated above. However I saw the post about changing gov. I’ll give it a shot!! Thanks

  • davrav

OK why is there no music application?!?!

  • prem

hi sir i have problem with install when i install the message will come radio version t989 UVCDH and it aborted please what i want to do sir help me

  • Rob

Probably the best custom ROM out there tight now. Working flawlessly using the instructions provided. TricksterMOD app enhances performance as per the video and the Android L keyboard is a nice touch once added. It amazes me that a phone from 2011 can still match some of today’s devices.

  • Perla

When I use the flash on my camera my phone turns off. Anyone else have this problem?

    • Wurm

Yes. Very annoying. Any fixes for this?

  • Bivor

i don’t thing viber is compatible with this rom. cause my contacts are not syncing with viber..

  • Kamil

This is the best rom I have ever had but battery-life is very poor. Can someone recommend me some more light system?

  • Heather

I’ve installed Carbon and it was working great, but ever since I restored my data it gets stuck on the lock screen, saying that I’m entering the incorrect pin. It won’t accept any of my previous pins. Any way I can bypass/reset this?

  • Jon

This rom is fast and looks good, but the battery life makes it basically useless. On CM11 with my larger battery I was at about 60% after 12 hours, on Carbon rom I’m at 22% after 12 hours. The additional features aren’t worth it to me.

    • james

i can get 11-12 hours on battery.

  • James Carter

The carbon 4.4.4 works great except for some reason the bluetooth wont pair with my computer and doesnt even find my bluetooth earpiece. Otherwise great rom.

  • mike M

just rooted my sgs2 a week ago after having for a year… glad i did but I cannot get any rom to work other then 4.4.3 carbon… I have tried 4.4.4 carbon but to no avail…I dl’ed the rom to my sd1 …upgraded my cwm recovery as well but im getting an error each time i try to load the rom from recovery (4.4.4 gapps work as well as the kernel …is there another mirror or link I could get or possibly another more up to date rom for my tmobile sgs2?

  • ariful

    Hi,
I just installed this rom. And I’m having some issues with it such as….. no sim service, baseband version unknown, reboots by itself… plz let me know what should i do at this point.

    thanks in advance

  • Shuvendu

I have installed this rom on Tmobile Galaxy S2.
Everything works fine but the sound volume (music, ringtone) is very low.

is there a fix for this? Please let me know.

  • Tony

    My camera won’t work. :/

  • ashna

Everytime I try to do this it says installation aborted because my radio version is old…what does that mean? Help please.

  • ee-lee

    Max,

Just installed Carbon ROM on my Tmobile Galaxy S2 this morning. My first root and custom ROM. So far pretty sweet! Not at all difficult. Just followed the directions. Did have a problem restoring my phone book and calendar. Tried to restore from backup and broke something. Just did a factory wipe/reset and reinstalled. Used one of my other S2’s and synced to Google then synced to newly installed ROM. Worked like a charm!

I do like the stock Samsung calendar better than the Google calendar installed as part of Google apps. The Samsung calendar has a lot more useful recurrance options than the Google calendar and it displays calendar events better. Minor annoyance, hopefully the battery life in Carbon ROM is better than the stock ROM

  • fnsk
