For this week’s ROM of the week for Galaxy S2 GT-i9100, SGH-i777, and SGH-T989, check out CM11 ROM.

Galaxy S2 GT-i9100

For GT-i9100, check out CyanFox ROM, built on CM11 and everything working out of the box including calls, data, camera, camcorder, video, sensors, wifi, gps, etc… I do recommend trying this build out as daily driver since everything is working and you should find a pleasant Android 4.4 KitKat experience.

Download CyanROM Android 4.4 Gapps (do not use other Gapps you will FC!)

Please follow How to Install Android 4.4 KitKat ROM on Galaxy S2!

AT&T Galaxy S2 SGH-i777

For AT&T Galaxy S2 SGH-i777, check out ported version of CM11. This build is pretty solid except video camcorder is not working and also battery stats are broken. But if you don’t take lots of videos (but still camera works) and you don’t mind the broken battery stats, you may be able to use/test it as daily driver.

Please follow How to Install Android 4.4 KitKat ROM on Galaxy S2!

T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989

For T-Mobile Galaxy S2 SGH-T989, check out CM11 ROM. This build is much more stable than the BeanStalk ROM with Android 4.4 we featured last week (absolutely no FCs) but it does have a broken camcorder(still camera works fine). If you don’t mind the broken camcorder, you can also use this as a daily driver.

Download Gapps for Android 4.4 (do not use older Gapps you will FC!)

BEFORE INSTALLING, UPGRADE your CWM Recovery to latest version by downloading the zip and installing with your CWM recovery:

Download and install CWM Recovery for KitKat custom ROMs

To install, reboot into recovery, make backup ROM, wipe data/factory reset, install ROM, install Gapps, and reboot.   (If for some reason you end up in a bootloop, reboot into recovery, go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts &Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.)

Overall, Android 4.4 KitKat custom ROMs for Galaxy S2 ROMs are coming really close to being bug-free, especially considering the GT-i9100 essentially has a bug-free ROM like CyanFox ROM. At the worst, you can always make a backup ROM of your current ROM, try out the ROM, then revert back.

So, definitely give CM11 ROM a go this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

After installing the CM11 Kit Kat Rom, everything seems to work ok but now we cannot copy Gapps to the phone form the computer… it keeps saying Cannot Copy Item The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected

        Any ideas?

Also I noticed when I tried to swipe a text it froze and locked up the keyboard for a few seconds.

  5. mike says:

Installed it on my i777 but hated it, after setup was completed battery life show 2%. It’s not worth it. I reinstalled Carbon rom and no issues.

    • DD says:

It was mentioned in the description: “video camcorder is not working and also battery stats are broken”. You got lucky with 2%. Mine is showing -1061820012% haha

    • RubenQ says:

Hi mike!.. Please, can you tell me how can I revert back to a different ROM, I’d like Carbon or AOKP, but when I try to flash those ROMs or other kernels like Siyah or Jeboo, the system shows me a “Failed” message.

I got now OMNI Rom with the CWM recovery v6.0.4 and it seems doesn’t support to flash a different ROM.

Please HELP! tell me how you did that!… And thanks a lot!

      • Jochen K. says:

Have you tried reinstalling the Nandroid backup of your previous installation and flashing the new ROM from there?

  6. Carlos Batista says:

So I have twrp 2.4.4 (I think) do you think I can still get cwm just by flashing it?

  7. Vijay Roy (PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS!!!) says:

Well I successfully flashed this rom for my Galaxy s2-I900.

I have a problem, I am unable to revert back to my AOKP jb milestone 2 rom.

When I am flashing that rom using the new cwm, its throwing an error.

Could you please suggest on how to proceed with this??

    Thanks a lot in advance..

  12. AJ says:

MX Player force closing when I try to play a video on it with this ROM, on T989. Anyone else have this problem?

  13. Lalit says:

I have also successfully flashed the rom on my s2 i9100 but there is a problem with the external SD Card. It does show the card but can not access and gives an error “Invalid Path” and shows 0.00B/0.00B but there is data on it.

    • Ahmad says:

I also have the same problem, I try to get a path to the external SD to restore from the backup that I did lately but there is just the internal SD.
I saw in the security settings that the memory that used is just the system memory, but can’t change it.
      Please help

  14. Rubic_Cube says:

Used the Carbon 4.3.1 ROM until 3-4 days back and used MIUI V5 for 1-2 days just to get a taste of what everybody is raving about… and now, finally getting a taste of 4.4 on my SGH-i777!
    – Battery status would not display. Every time I disconnect from the charger, the phone warns me that there is very little power left. Like DD said, I see -1061820012% in the battery status. Also, because there is no assurance for battery status, I fear using this ROM as a daily driver.
    – Camera works ok as long as I do not switch it to Camcorder mode. In Camcorder mode, recording sfarts.. but app FCs when you stop recording. No recording is actually saved. Other than these 2 peeves, I guess it looks pretty good. I would like some option where I can configure status bar like displaying battery % etc.

  15. Rubic_Cube says:

@Max – any reports on OmniROM?

  16. AJ says:

Video recording not working when I use the stock camera.apk and also all other camera apks. on t989

  17. Shane says:

It works ok so far on my t989, as we all know some features don’t work. the only problem so far is the video cam. other wise it stable. am in Jamaica so some of the features doesn’t work here but the ROM is nice.

  18. CADman says:

Flashed the new cm11 kitkat on my t989. No problems at all. runs really smooth. everything seems to work except I don’t have screen capture. But other than that it works great. Good job guys.

  19. CADman says:

Just noticed my video doesn’t work. Camera works great. When I switch to video, it changes but when I press the button to begin recording I get nothing.

Battery icon is the only icon that doesn’t want to change color.

    i used

XposedInstaller_2.4-beta1.apk with Xblast tools for above Android 4.0.3+ module

It also gave me the ram bar, kill button, dark halo background and i was able to change the clock font.

i was able to change the boot animation using ROM TOOL BOX apk

Do a full wipe and re-install the rom. That might help.

      • Alaa says:

how could I make full wipe??

        • Xavier says:

go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts &Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM

  28. Xavier says:

thanks to member JuggaloDroid on XDA for the help i got gravitybox to work for me and change all the colors on kitkat

installed busybox free from the play store

and i was able to get gravitybox to work. no other module should be active.

  29. tomas says:

Running it for the Second day. One charge is lasting me 14 hours give or take a few hours depending on how much I use it. My only problem is the WiFi. The first day it was fine I reset the phone once and now the WiFi is stuck on activation…. I’m going to try to reinstall it and back up just in case.

    • Tomas says:

Just an update. I’ve been running this ROM for 9 days now. I resolved the wifi problem by reinstalling the rom with no wipes, and it fixed the issue but took away my awesome battery life. One charge now will last me about 7-8 hours depending on the use. Camera camcorder and everything else works great. I’m going to test my luck one more time and reinstall it once more just to see if I can get that boost back to the battery.

  30. sandesh says:

Installed it on i9100 and then phone is stuck on samsung logo! How do i get it working?

    • Sven says:

      Read the instruction above.

Hou got into a bootloop. Perform, info recovery mode, a full system wipe/wild cache partition/wie dalik (advanced) and tthen go tot (cwm)) Mount & storage andere performance a format /system

  31. Mikel says:

I have been running this on my SGH-T989 for about 2 days and
there were a few minor issues that I noticed.
    1. Camcorder not working
    2. Netflix not working
    3. Google Play Music App music plays choppy, all other apps play mp3’s fine
    4. MX player FC upon trying to play a video.
    5. also hangs up a bit when coming from sleep mode

Coming from the Beanstalk 4.3 ROM I kind of miss some of the customizations,
however this is a great ROM to use for a daily driver.

  32. poppiesgdd says:

Nice ROM , but still a bit bland yet.
We can’t have everything at once, or there
wouldn’t be anything to look forward to .
Adding pages is an absolute pain compared
to jellybean , and around 40% of the apps I
use don’t work at all yet , or only partially.
My biggest gripe is the number pad for the
phone dialing is too small for someone with
large fingers as it’s too easy to touch the key
above or below the one you are trying to touch.
This would take up extra time in an emergency.
This is one time where bigger is better without
an argument from males or females .
Good job by the developer to have a ROM this
good with nearly everything working this early.
I will be using this ROM as a daily driver, with its
few bugs until its next iteration comes out .
Hopefully someone listens about the number pad.

  33. Alaa says:

this ROM has many bugs, can I go back and install 4.1.2 ROM???

    • Jack says:

Yeah there shouldent be any problem with it, just make sure to wipe data/factory reset. And if it gets stuck go to Advanced Wipe for TWRP or Mounts &Storage for CWM, format/wipe /system, then re-install ROM.

  34. vicky says:

the rom is amazing….love it…thanks guys
how to add more options in the notification window…plzzz help

  35. Joe says:

Hi…I followed instruction to wipe from mount and storage option and used format /system…. and then reinstalled this ROM but still the WIFI is not getting detected when the phone is switching and I had to use my 3G for accessing net….WIFI not working….please help…

  36. Jack says:

Alright i was wondering if anyone could help me install viper4android on my T-Mobile Gs2. I follow the video max posted on it but when i get to the Buildprop editor i cant find lpa.use-stagefright, or tunnel.decode. Lpa.decode is the only one of the 3 i can find. Also i can’t seem to find where in the music setting you change the default music effects selection on this rom either? I really need some help!

    • Blake says:

Hey jake i had the same issue but i didnt worry about changing settings in bulidprop cause i have a different music player than the stock one if you have next, Apollo or something different than stock music player you shouldnt have to worry about that as far as setting start the music player go to the settings in the music player chose equalizer from there you should be able to choose viper i also went ahead and froze the other music effects with titanium backup so viper is the only effects available. Hope this helps

  37. v10 says:

any info on how to get proper path to the extSDcard working? format does not work stuck with the problem. also i cant seem to find a way to install another rom now . when i try to flash Kernel_Siyah-Dorimanx-V8.20-[16-06]-[20-05]-JB-SGII-PWR-CORE to instal another rom it doesn’t install at all.

  38. sandeep says:

For the issue : INVALID PATH TO “EXTERNAL SD”
    Install : “ASTRO FILE MANAGER”.
even i faced this issue on default ‘file manager’ and ‘es file explorer’ ….but u can access external sd files on astro file manager. 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • Jochen K. says:

This won’t help as Titanium Backup stores its files on the external SD, and it DOESN’T recognize the card – I think.
For the time being I reverted to Alliance ROM 9.0 and Jelly Bean 4.1.2 – and shall wait until there is a rather more complete version of a KitKat ROM to be had.

  39. Joe says:

Hi…please help…I am not able to use WIFI as when I try to on the WIFI during the installation and reinstallation of CM 11 ROM and also after installation manually it is not detecting the WIFI when I try to switch on the key for WIFI. It is just moving to On switch but lies on light grey without any changes.

Has anyone found out how to get google now? cause i don’t see it as a homescreen

    • Jack says:

Just hold down on the screen like you would to change the wallpaper or access widgets then press settings it should be there.

    • Xavier says:

I have two t989 running this rom and gapps. I only get the Google cards on one of them. Don’t know why? I backed up google search via titanium on the one working then i used that backup to restore google search on the other s2 and i was able to get the cards.

I do have my working sim on the one that worked and there is no sim on the other s2. Don’t know if that’s the reason. Anybody know why?

  41. Joe says:

    • Xavier says:

You might also want to reflash your radio. Afterward do a wipe cache partition and then go into adnanced menu and do a wipe dalvik cache and it wouldn’t hurt to do a factory reset after all that. Doing this steps after installing any rom might also help to eliminate errors.

  42. Sarinas says:

Hi, I just installed this rom on my i9100 and it’s missing the SU binary.. It says that it needs to be rooted manually. Will Jeboo kernel for Jellybean work? Or maybe the SU 0.99?
I can’t find any standalone 4.4 kernel for this. 🙁

  43. Cory says:

Anyone has a fix for the hang when the phone coming out of sleep mode as yet

    • Tengs says:

I went into performance and changed the minimum CPU frequency from 384 to 594, left it on interactive lags on unlock very rarely for me now. Maybe upping it one more will remove the lag completely. Hopefully this helps. Seems like a lot of people are having the lag issue

I am not a geek, but simply followed the instructions to download and Voila, I got the updated version. Was using Slimbean (4.3.2) and i must say that this is better than slimbean. I had really small fonts there and I have no complaints here. All my app works fine. Kudos to the development team. Love you guys.

this is pretty good. No issues other than missing features from 4.3.1 >4 stars.

  57. Niks says:

Post install I still have below issues… appreciate if someone can direct me to correct info:
    1. Phone goes into deep sleep but does not come out of it. Read somewhere that min CPU speed should be set to 384 – but for me the option to set CPU speed is disabled
    2. Very fast battery drain

Also, are there any other kernels available? like dorimanX etc? would like to deploy.

    • Niks says:

have gingerbread 2.3.6 can i directly upgrade to this ROM?
Do i need to change the kernel or not?

    • Vishal says:

You can change it directly no need to change kernel just flash it..

      • Vishal says:

Edit : you can upgrade directly no need to change kernel. just flash above rom and gapps

        • Ken says:

Thanks for the very very quick reply. I’ve been looking for this answer for some time before I upgrade. But it is implied but not specifically said anywhere that I’ve seen in any forum or site.

One last question and i think i’ll be ready. my phone is rooted and unlocked presently.

After upgrading the ROM does the phone remain rooted and/or unlocked?
If it needs to be rooted again. Does the method for rooting a 2.3.6 GB also work for a 4.x.x? Or do i need to find a specifix 4.x.x root method? Thx

          • nido says:

Yes it will remain unlocked. By default SupserUser is not installed so you need to installed by yourself and it will again rooted.
hope this would be the answer you are looking for.

  60. Tengs says:

It will stay rooted, also I’m not positive but you may need to update your radio b4 flashing to a 4.x.x rom if your coming from stock gb for the first time.

  61. Vishal says:

Oh ya… You have to upgrade radio to UVMC6 for any 4.x.x base rom…

Here is link of UVMC6 radio :

Keeps telling me ” Unfortunately the process has stopped” and after i tap ok it pops up again

what should i do i already flashed the rom again and same thing happened

  69. brennon says:

i tried installing the rom and i keep getting a error saying “ERROR: Radio must be newer than UVMC6” any help on this?

  70. Rojo says:

Nice and fast rom everything works fine….Only thing that annoying me is I can’t access the external sd card….

    • Jochen K. says:

No access to the SD card, but everything works fine?

      Very amusing 😉

    • Tengs says:

Download file manager from the play store and remove the preloaded file manager using titanium back up. Seems to only be an issue on a couple of the file browsers.

      • Jochen K. says:

        Are you sure?
I took a look at this ROM and quickly reverted to my old Alliance ROM because of this very problem – Titanium Backup couldn’t find the SD card either, and as it backs up to that card, I couldn’t use it to restore anything.

        • Tengs says:

Have you tried the newest release? I’m on a t989 too not sure which s2 your using. I use tb every time I update it with no problem. I had the same issue at first but I installed file manager and updated at the same time so I’m not sure which solved it

          • J.K. says:

I used the link provided by Max the day before yesterday.

Trying out Custom ROMs and reverting to my old setup is always a major hassle for me, so I’ll definitely wait a week or two before I try again.

(The hassle stems from the fact that I’ve got LOTS of apps and most are on the SD card; when I re-install the Nandroid backup of my configuration, the apps on card are always listed as “uninstalled” and have to be re-installed/moved to card one by one.)

            • Tengs says:

The newest download is cm-11.20132312-hercules-nightly. I just double checked to make sure and tb worked 100 percent. I erased my apps and restored them with it. And created a second back up with it on my SD card. The issue might of been solved or you might had a bad flash when you flashed it. Know what you mean tho trying new roms sucks for me to work all the apps I have too. Maybe someone else that has the updated version can test out tb to double check.

  71. Shane says:

I’m using cm-11,20132412-hercules-nightly after upgrading from an earlier nightly. I must say I found the nightlies to work much better only thing is the camcorder but I used other third party

  74. Hugo Diaz says:

A few days ago, I installed the CyanFox version on my Galaxy S2 i9100, but lost root so I reverted to my Carbon ROM.
Today I installed CyanFox 4.4.2 again, but this time I did it correctly.
Everything is working fine, video works, root is working, Titanium works and finds everything in the SD card, and it has a better battery life than Carbon.
Only thing I miss is network speed and change colors in the Status bar.
This is now my daily driver.

  75. Rich says:

Can I install CM11 using TWRP which is already on my phone or do I need to install CWM first?

I have installed this ROM for my S2 i9100.Whenever i try to download applications from Playstore,it doesn’t download, there is always an error.

There’s this thing called cell broadcast or News alert which keeps on coming. How do i remove it?

And how do i download apps from playstore. Please help

  78. Hugo Diaz says:

A few days ago the ROM asked for permission to download an update.
I updated to 2.0.2 and now I have network traffic on the status bar. Yessss!
Everything still works fine. I recommend it highly.
The problems I had the first time I installed it were caused by me, not doing things correctly.
Just wipe everything. Do a clean install. When I did this the second time, everything worked fine: SD card, WiFi, video camera, Titanium back up, everything…

  79. Reddie says:

Hi..i would like to ask..can i install this roms to my Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100T Australia Vodafone?
    and which one the link?

    • Jochen K. says:

I think the best thing for you to do is Search for your device on the Cyanogen web site.

      • Reddie says:

        Hi…thank for your reply..
But,i have go to Cyanogenmod website,in the website i just found Galaxy SII (AT&T)/i777 and Galaxy SII (international)/i9100.
So,which one i must choose for download?
Thanks a lot for your reply before..

        • Jochen K. says:

Out of hand, it sounds as if your device is not supported at all by CM – surely the “T” must mean that it’s in some way a separate device, and if doing a Search on the CM web site didn’t find it… 🙁

Any one else with this issue?

  81. JS-Essex says:

Been using this for a few weeks and out of the 3 kitkat roms this is the best one I’ve used…..its simple, everything works, it doesn’t crash and does a good job….. Only problems are finding a decent launcher as I liked Samsung’s Touchwiz…… I liked Samsung’s Radio app, Contacts app, Dailer App, Message App and Calender app.

Using T989. Experienced rooter/flasher. CyanogenMod has let me down again. Camcorder still not working since CM10. WiFi worked for about 60 minutes before out would not detect any signal. ROM installed completely trouble-free the first time: upgraded to latest CWM, factory reset, wipe cache partition, wiped dalvik cache, installed ROM, installed gapps, rebooted. No hang, no bootloop, no glitches. Let it sit while Google updated via “restore from my phone from my account.” All looked well. After sitting for a while, will not connect to Wi-Fi. Tried camcorder, failed (as expected, however). I love the aesthetics of CM ROMS, just wish I could get one that worked properly. Switched back to JMT.

all is good except for the fact that I backed up my contacts/messages using Kies and now I cannot connect my Galaxy S2 to the PC. Better yet, I cannot use Kies.
Kies does not recognize custom ROM and now I cannot restore my contacts. Any suggestions to solve this problem?

For example, what other app can use backups made by Kies?
