For this week’s T-Mobile S2 ROM of the week, check out Carbon ROM.

Based on Android 4.2.2, this is an AOSP ROM (What is AOSP?) that mixes in many of the latest AOSP custom ROM features like HALO and AOKP ROM Control Settings (similar).

This isn’t an “official” version by Carbon Team but it is built specifically for the SGH-T989 so I would say it would be just as good or even better.

Apart from UI customization and HALO feature on the ROM, this Carbon ROM also comes loaded with AC!D Sound Mod, Awesome Beats, and Noozxoide EIZO rewire apps to tweak your sound in any way and fashion. One of the things I personally look for in AOSP custom ROMs are these audio MODs as they can really spice your life up listening to music the way you want to.

Also, this version of Carbon ROM ships with 2Ghz Uber kernel that allow you to overclock to 2Ghz. My T-Mobile S2 ran actually fine even at 2Ghz so this could be a great ROM for those of you who want to take your S2 to the limit and play lots of HD games.

Overall, Carbon ROM for T-Mobile S2 is definitely a winner so give it a try this week(end) and do let me know what you think!

Does this rom have the overlay with the halo feature as in the previous rom of the week? If so, I’m sold.

Also, is there a way for someone to help me figure out how to install the Slim camera with this rom?

    • Aaron says:

Never heard of slim camera, I am using Snap Camera with is acceptable. I am interest in slim camera if you find out how to make it work.

Stock camera with this rom sucks.

Other than that this rom is fantastic so far.

I currently have a AOKP build 6 rom. Can I just do an update, or will I have to do a factory reset? Thanks in advance!

I tried this ROM for a few moments, then couldn’t do it. I couldn’t make the app drawer scrollable by alphabetical order, I couldn’t figure out how to change the lock screen stuff, I couldn’t figure out how to make it vibrate on touch, or ring and vibrate on a call. One thing I DID like was that it said that it allowed for the menu/home/back/search buttons to glow when a notification is received (which should be a default for T989 users, since we don’t have a notification LED.). It just seemed like it wasn’t quite what I was looking for, sadly. Unless someone can explain/help with these issues, I couldn’t deal with it for more than a half an hour. Also, I wanted to do the nav bar buttons, but the icons weren’t customizable as they should be. So yeah, I gave up on this ROM pretty quickly.

To those of you who have tried it out, does this ROM have Wi-Fi calling on it?

Hey, I replaced my rom with this one and it was just a disaster. When it booted up the browser didn’t work and it didn’t have a google play app or shortcut so I couldn’t do anything with the phone. I tried putting it into recovery but after Odin the phone was booting up. It seemed to be stuck on the “carbon” screen so I left it all night. I woke up to the realization that my phone was bricked. I’ve installed a rom before but this one gave me trouble. Watch yourself if you try this rom.

    • ronin says:

      Did you flash the Gapps?

    • Ay says:

may come late .. but hope it help some other people.. When mine get stuck in the Carbon logo ( left it overnight and just the carbon logo displayed even with multiple restart)..
The solution is to press the volume up button until it displays Android apps updating..
      I hope this help !

      • Ay says:

I think this is try and error…. i tried it again.. but it didn’t leave the carbon logo.. so i boot to recovery again. and wipe the cache.. press the up button for about 8 sec. then pressed the power (in pulses not continuously depressed)) and it worked

  14. Mark says:

Is anyone else having issues with the apn settings. I’m using sgh-t989

  15. Brian says:

This one appears to have killed my phone. Did a super wipe, flashed the ROM and GAPPS, rebooted. Phone hung on the carbon screen for several minutes. Did a hard reset, attempted to do a super wipe; hung in the process. Tried to do a factory reset/wipe and it hung while formatting /cache and then rebooted into the carbon ROM (which then hung again). Could use some help, please.

    • Mark says:

My experience with super wipe is the same. Unroot phone using the process on this website, then go back and root your phone. That’s how i fixed it when i had that problem

      • kyle says:

This person speaks truth. I had the hang as well and although its a tad more work to do the unroot etc, it immediately fixed the problem.

        • gera says:

mine is doing the same but when i try to go to recoverymod it says no file something it doesnt let me reset it or anything:/ help??

  16. Hugo Pimentel says:

hey does anybody knows how can i improve the internet signal on my phone using this rom? i really like it its smoth and everything works good, im just having issues with the h+, many times it goes to 3g which means no connections, and i have to be toggling offand on the airplane mode to get h+ again, and that doesnt happen using some other roms that has touchwiz like jedi mind, i guess is something on the radio but dont know too much about that stuff, so please if anyone knows how to fix it ill be very thankful

    • odroid says:

I’m having the exact problem (radios not working) yet all my apn information seems to be accurate based on what my network provider (Koodo, Canada) and the tweeker app provide. I still can’t find a forum with a fix. I also tried CyamogenMod 10.1 for my SGH-T989 (S2 X) and I get the same problem. The only rom that seems to work smoothly is Jedi Jelly but still no update to 4.2.2 for that rom. I also seem to be having an issue with a weak wifi signal since installing Carbon. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  17. Bradly says:

How do I make this rom set up with my T mobile account to get my contacts and can not setup Gmail account either? Can anybody help

  18. Akshat says:

All the sudden I cant put my phone on vibrate anymore, its either silent or sound ๐Ÿ™ Can someone please respond quick?

  19. Christina says:

So, I installed this rom and everything was working perfectly except I had no connection to mobile data. So i tried doing re-flashing and using the latest Dark Side super wipe and installing a custom kernal (uber) when I reflashed, I booted it up, and it keeps giving me an error that google apps has stopped working. I can’t get passed that screen on my phone and therefore cant boot into TWRP because I can not access the Goo.im app. So now I am flashing my soft bricked phone using odin back to stock. This really sucks.

If any one else has this issue, can you please describe what you did to fix it? because i really loved this rom. ๐Ÿ™

    • gera says:

same here man could you fix it??

      • Jason says:

No i never did find a way to fix it

        • edgar olmedo says:

Hey I had the exact same problem! I couldnt restore a previous ROM and I couldnโ€™t factory data reset it. What I did to fix it was install a different type of recovery on my phone. It isnโ€™t the official clockworkmod recovery but it is another one based off of it. This worked for me, hopefully it works for you guys too

  23. eric says:

I was able to successfully install the ROM but when I tried to install the GAPPS I get a message saying

    E:Can’t open /storage/sdcard1/gapps-jb-20130301-sighned.zip
    (bad)
    Installation aborted.

plz help I would really appreciate it

    • tony says:

Try leaving off the gapps and install everything else as normal and install the radio fix off the site I posted earlier if you have problems with it still let me know I’ve been using this ROM since around july and had NO problems after I read about it and tweaked it. Let me know if you need help. Its awesome. Try rocket music player and ADW launcher with it.

      • tony says:

if you are having troubles with getting service try this afterwords SGH-T989-UVMC6 (T-Mobile) 4.1.2 (mirror) on this site > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400

      • eric says:

oh OK i”ll do that. I’m not much of an expert with flashing this is my first time so I just wanted to get some feedback before possibly bricking my phone lol. So when I install the ROM I just reboot without installing any of the GAPPS, that’s what your saying? Will I still have a functional ROM? and thanks for the response I really appreciate it.

        • tony says:

Read my comment below and after you do this and manage to get it working then throw your phone on charge, go to google store, search battery calibration and find the one by NEMA once to 100% hit calibrate and boom you’re set.

  24. tony says:

As long as its a T-mobile SGH-T989 and you follow all of the other steps then yes it should. What I was, used > Darkside superwipe > installed ROM > Installed radio fix > rebooted and everything worked fine.

For you I would try one more time using Darkside superwipe > install ROM > gapps > radio fix and see if it works, if not or gapps doesn’t install just follow the same steps and leave off Gapps.

    • eric says:

yea I used superwipe and when I rebooted the home touch sensor wouldn’t work and the browser isn’t working either :/. I left GAPPS off since it still wouldn’t install.

      • tony says:

there’s a newer version of Carbon rom aval. try it . make sure you have the UVMC6 or TLMC4 radios installed before you start . go check it out

        • eric says:

yea i just installed carbon 4.3 rom + gapps and flashed the oct 16 uber kernel from cl3ner. very smooth and responsive! thanks for the help though really appreciate it!
